Is it legal to download videos from YouTube?

Just like many of other Google services, YouTube is one of the most famous Google’s website. Not only for Google, but also for whole world. There are tons of myths saying about legality of downloading YouTube video from third party applications and websites. Today, we’re going to disclose whether it is legal to download YouTube video in the form of mp3/mp4 or no. Before we break the ice, let’s see how does YouTube works.

How does YouTube work in the case of Copyrights and earning revenue. 

Starting from how to make food to how to make helicopters, from songs to trailers, from speeches to stunts. It is completely legal to watch video on YouTube website or application. With the help of Content ID, YouTube tracks it’s user’s video to avoid copyright issues.

Let’s take an example, I made a YouTube channel and then uploaded it. A unique Content ID will be issued on my video which will track the copyright status. If someone copies my video, I will be notified at the same time and accordingly, I can ask YouTube to take action against the rule-breaker.

Can I download a video from YouTube?

Yes, you can download video from YouTube but still there are some conditions. You cannot download every video from YouTube. Every channel has copyright agreement with the YouTube and the user. The YouTube channel owner can put up restrictions to download video ‘from’ YouTube. By pressing ‘Download’ icon below the video.

However, You cannot download every video from YouTube. If the channel owner puts up the restriction to ‘not’ to allow their viewers to download, the ‘Save’ or ‘Download’ button won’t be shown up.

What does YouTube’s Terms of Service say?

YouTube’s terms specify that you are expected to access content for personal use as permitted under their Terms of Service. For the downloading part, YouTube specifically says:

“You shall not download any Content unless you see a “download” or similar link displayed by YouTube on the Service for that Content.”
Now it’s clear that you cannot download video from YouTube until the owner of the channel allows it. And yes, it is illegal to download video from third party application or websites.
